Revolutionary War Patriots Banner

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project was created for the Medina Historical Society as part of the community’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. I was given a list of names of individuals from Medina County who fought in the Revolutionary War and was tasked with creating a banner that would honor and recognize these individuals during the 250th Fourth of July parade.

The goal of the project was to transform a historical list of names into a visually engaging banner that could be carried in the parade and viewed by the community. The design needed to communicate the historical significance of the individuals being honored while also being large, readable, and appropriate for a public event.

DESIGN DIRECTION

I wanted the banner to have a historic, patriotic appearance that reflected the time period of the Revolutionary War. I used an aged parchment texture, traditional typography, and a Revolutionary War cannon illustration to create a design that feels connected to early American history.

The overall color palette of cream, black, and subtle brown tones was chosen to create a traditional, aged appearance. The parchment background gives the banner the feeling of an old historical document while helping the names and illustrations remain clear and readable.

TYPOGRAPHY & COMPOSITION

The title, “Revolutionary War Patriots in Medina County,” was given a prominent position at the top of the banner to immediately communicate its purpose. The names provided to me were arranged into multiple columns around a central Revolutionary War cannon illustration.

The cannon serves as the main visual element and reinforces the connection to the Revolutionary War. The Medina County Historical Society name is placed beneath the illustration to identify the organization honoring these individuals.

The handwritten-style typography used for the names was selected to give the banner a historical and personal quality. The layout allows the names to remain the primary focus while the central illustration and decorative elements provide visual context.

Because the banner will be carried during a parade, I focused on creating a simple, horizontal composition that would be easy to read from a distance while still allowing viewers to see the individual names when they are closer.

FINAL CONCEPT

The final design combines local history, patriotism, and community remembrance into a single commemorative banner. Rather than simply displaying a list of names, the design presents the Revolutionary War patriots as an important part of Medina County’s history.

The finished banner was created to be carried in the 250th Fourth of July parade, allowing the Medina Historical Society to publicly recognize the individuals from Medina County who fought in the Revolutionary War and connect their history to the community’s celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
